Going Natural Naturally
Did you know that women use an average of 12 cosmetic products daily, exposing themselves to more than 160 unique cosmetic chemicals. Products marketed to black women like hair relaxers and skin lighteners contain some of the most toxic chemicals used by the cosmetics industry. Perms, dyes and glues contain chemicals and hormones linked to early puberty and cancer, including parabens, placenta and formaldehyde. In this workshop, Going Natural Naturally, Brandie Gilliam of Organic Beauty Talk teaches you the importance of reading ingredient labels so that you can know what’s in your products and be a true Naturalista!
About Brandie Gilliam
Brandie Gilliam is passionate about healthy non-toxic products and the founder of Organic Beauty Talk.

Transitioning 101 by Denise Valentine – Niecy’s Natural Hair Salon
So you want to let your hair transition into its natural curl…how do you do it? The big chop or let it grow out? This class will describe the do’s and don’ts of a healthy hair transition. Hairstyles and hair products that work during transition will be discussed. Tips on how to care for your natural hair will be shared. Bring your questions!
Denise Valentine retired from Lucent Technologies as Director of Installation Services in 2001 and is now the owner and operator of Niecys Naturals. After attending MJ’s Beauty School and earning her license in Braiding and Hair Weaving. Niecy launched her business, Braids by Niecy. The focus was on braids with extensions and assisting customers through transition from relaxed to natural hair. She went through her own transition during beauty school and the early years of her business. As she focused on great customer service, client education, and beautiful hairstyles, her business exploded. She decided to focus on natural hairstyles only; for example, locs and twists, and changed to Niecys Naturals. Niecy continues her education by attending hair shows and classes and has many certificates indicating the expansion of her skills and techniques. She regularly attends the World Natural Hair Show in Atlanta to keep pace with hairstyling trends and new products.
As a civic volunteer, Denise Valentine was first elected to the DeSoto City Council in May, 2007 and re-elected in 2010, when her fellow Councilmembers selected her to serve as Mayor Pro Tem. Ms. Valentine currently serves as the Council liaison to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Arts Commission
Loc Styling 101 with Rayshunda “Ms. Ray” Holt owner of Deep in the Roots Salon
In this class you will learn how to style, groom and maintain your locs. How to do updos, crinkles, curls and more….
Rayshunda Holt, “Ms. Ray” , Master Braider, a native of Dallas, has been styling and braiding hair for over 20 years. Ms. Ray discovered her love for hair when she was seven years of age. Ms. Ray decided to transition to specializing in natural hair in 2000 after making a conscious decision to never relax her hair again. She has always wanted to own her own Natural Hair Salon. After working for other salons that provided chemical services, it motivated her to open up a Salon that was chemical free, so that clients who were natural could have a healthy atmosphere. She is single and a proud mother of five children. Ms. Ray has a love and passion to help African Americans and those of African descent to embrace their natural beauty and have a love of self first and not fall victim to American standards of beauty. She continues to do seminars, training and hairshows to motivate and inspire people through her passionate speaking about hair and health. This is a big world, she says, and if we all were suppose to look alike, it would be Boring. Ms. Ray, encourages all men, women and children of all cultures to embrace “The Natural Essence of You.”
Black Women “Do” Workout” - I Just Love My Wooly Hair!
Discussing the benefits of having wooly hair and working out.
Crystal Adell started Black Women Do Workout as a campaign for African-American women on Facebook.com and is held as her grassroots effort for championing Black women who are determined to not be a part of the staggering 66% ratio for African-American women in the US who are overweight according to the Centers for Disease Control. While obesity increases the risk of heart disease, type 2-diabetes and, high blood pressure (leading diseases in African-Americans), this call to action is her personal attempt to work with a collective who are more than willing to share their fitness goals, encouragement and lifestyle changes towards healthier living. One of the major challenges with this campaign is getting national awareness. Crystal Adell would like to take her vision for the Black Women “DO” Workout Awareness Campaign© to a National reality with media appearances, citywide meet-ups, health and wellness retreats and fitness tours. Now residing in the Dallas, Texas area she has not seen a m1odel like this realized where there is dissemination of information on a national level of fitness and health related benefits targeting specifically African American women. www.BWDWO.com
